The Hornet-class Carrier is unusual in its shape and the size of its starfighter complement. Designers felt that a more traditional shaped-vessel forced the vessel's light weaponry to be restricted to inefficient firing arcs. The hangar bay exits to the rear; the two pylons on either side are not the engines, as some observers assume, but rather house non-essential areas, and are heavily armored to give the fighters additional exit cover.
As with all MMA-produced combat vessels, the ship features the innovative harjel repair system, a set of backup shields rated at one-third the power of the ship's standard shields, and the new PDS in addition to the ship's standard weaponry and defenses.
