The Mandator-class Star Destroyer was originally designed by Kuat Drive Yards as a potential replacement for the aging Imperial-class of vessels. Two variants of this new class were prototyped by KDY, one in the main Yards complex at Kuat, the other at a secret KDY facility in the Deep Core.
The primary Mandator variant is designed and built as a top-of-the-line warship with completely modernized equipment. The vessel's primary turbolaser armament has been upgraded with a unique gas cooling process, allowing a faster cool down and recharge rate, giving her a rate of fire unmatched by other vessels. Additionally, the Mandator’s engines have been completely redesigned, resulting in a higher flank speed and better acceleration than the smaller Imperial-class. The primary variant has also been coated with a sensor absorbent substance, which aids the ship in avoiding detection by hostile forces. This film has been rated to reduce the range of effective enemy identification of the Mandator by between 40% and 60%, depending on the sensor package used to detect it, and the sensor focus used.
The secondary variant of the Mandator-class is designed with the additional primary objectives of stealth and espionage in mind, without sacrificing prowess as a warship. To this end, the secondary Mandator variant is equipped with some of the most advanced technologies in use anywhere in the galaxy. These include state-of-the-art electrochromatic paneling developed by KDY, which in conjunction with numerous holographic projectors located on the hull, can simulate the visual appearance of any of over fifty capital ship classes in the ship's database. Furthermore, several sophisticated sensor jamming, redirecting, and interfering packages have been installed, allowing this Mandator to further confuse and disrupt enemy scanners. The technological sophistication of this variant comes at a very high price, however; it cost the Kuat Drive Yards nearly ten times as many credits to produce as the primary variant.
