The Whirlwind-class Heavy Carrier is designed to carry large numbers of fighters into a battle in relative comfort, or, in lieu of fighters, it can carry a large number of shuttles to ferry cargo or troops down to the surface. Its turbolaser and ion cannon complement is enough to ward of enemy capital ships, at least long enough until it can get help, and the quad lasers and PDS is more than sufficient to defeat enemy fighter attacks.
This is one of four capital ships that features MMA-designed ablative armor in addition to standard armor plate. The Whirlwind-class carries 2.5 meters of superdense ablative material, mostly around the vulnerable fighter bays, allowing the ship to weather considerable damage before sustaining hull breach and giving damage control parties extra time to restore shield generators. The density and thickness of the armor can withstand several dozen turbolaser hits before burning away to reveal more standard armor plate underneath.
As with all MMA-produced combat vessels, the ship features the innovative harjel repair system, a set of backup shields rated at one-third the power of the ship's standard shields, and the new PDS in addition to the ship's standard weaponry and defenses.
